Buyer's Guide: How to Purchase Broadband Plans

In this guide, we bring to you, things to keep in mind while choosing a broadband network. This will help you make an informed decision to select the broadband package that fits your budget and is ideal to suit your requirement.

Types of Broadband

The broadband internet service is offered in forms such as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), Cable Modem, Wireless Broadband, Fiber-Optic and Satellite.

When we talk of DSL, it is important to understand that this internet service utilizes unused telephone wires to make its connection. Here, the speed of internet access varies with the distance from the switching station or telephone company facility.

The more closer you are to the switching station, better the internet speed. The broadband cable connection is provided by the local cable TV provider. Here, the cable operators provides the broadband service using the same cables that provide the picture and sound to your TV.

You can use your computer or laptop even while your TV is on. The internet transmission speed would vary depending on the type of cable modem, cable network and number of users using the service at a time.

Traffic load impacts speed since users from one particular area share the connection bandwidth which slows the speed of the system. However, the DSL and cable broadband service definitely provide greater bandwidth in comparison to other services. This allows you to multitask and carry out your tasks with ease.

The wireless broadband service functions by connecting the customer’s location with the service provider’s facility using a radio link. The speed of this internet service is a lot similar to DSL and cable modem and works well in remote areas where DSL or cable modem would turn out to be costly.

Mobile phone service providers are making available the mobile wireless broadband service. They are ideal for customers who require internet access while on the go. A special card for the PC with a built-in antenna that can be plugged into your laptop or computer will help you make use of this service.

The speed here may not be great but is a good option to consider if you require internet access while on the go.

Top 5 Broadband Providers in India

The fiber-optic is considered to be the fastest internet connection and the newest broadband service. However, this service is not rampant due to the time it takes to lay the fiber-optic cables.

Therefore the areas that offer this service are limited, but, if available in an area you are located in, it is definitely a great option to consider. When we talk of the satellite option for broadband internet service, it is understood to be slower than the DSL or cable modem broadband service.

It is a good option for those living in rural areas and do not have DSL or cable service access. The speed of internet access would vary here depending on the consumer’s line of sight to the orbiting satellite and the weather conditions.

So, while making a decision, it is important to check what form of broadband internet service is best in the area you live and apt for your requirement.

Broadband Speed

It is important to understand the speed you would require before selecting a broadband service. Here, you also need to consider the number of people using the connection. This would also include the number of other users that tap in to the same ISP.

The speed of your internet connection would also depend on the megabits per second (Mbps). If you require the network for your personal reasons or for use within your home, a speed of 5Mbps would be more than sufficient.

However, if you require the connection to work from home and have a lot of big files to work on, or video content you expect to use, a faster connection would serve the purpose.

On the other hand if you wish to take a broadband connection for your business or corporate requirement, the speed required would be comparatively high. So, based on your requirement, select a broadband speed that would perfectly meet your need.

Broadband Download Limit

Just like the speed of your internet connection, the amount of data you require also depends on your requirement. If you require an internet to carry out simple task of online banking and sending out a few personal emails, the amount of data you require is minimal.

However, if you have a large family where the broadband connection is used for downloading videos, playing games etc, you would need a higher download limit. On the other hand if your downloading of data is a lot on an everyday basis, then resisting your usage by a limit is not sensible.

In such cases looking for broadband service that would include unlimited data usage is ideal. While choosing unlimited data, it is essential that you check reviews to understand what to expect.

This is because some companies state the deals to allow unlimited data usage but after fair usage, data downloading can be restricted. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the package you choose provides truly unlimited data usage that would never slow or restrict downloading.

Budget and Bundle Packages

If you use your landline phone at home and digital TV as well, combining these services along with your broadband internet connection would save you the hassle of having to pay multiple bills. This would result in saving money as well.

Here when choosing to club these services, it is important to check details like speed of your broadband connection, call rates, customer service and the cost for all these services over the term of the contract.

However, if you prefer different service providers for your phone or TV connection, then bundle package is not an option to consider. Keeping in mind your budget, you would find plenty of great value offers with great speed and download limit.

It is important though to check all costs like installation fees etc. that are included with the service before choosing a service provider.

We hope that the list of best plans by some of the top broadband service providers and the tips in this buyers guide will help you make an informed decision while selecting a broadband plan.
